Sunday Browsing

Here at The Times, we often hear a common story of usage from our customers: Reading the Sunday Times, spreading out the paper on a table while eating brunch. For many of our customers, this ritual is fundamental to their enjoyment of the weekend, and its absence would be jolting.

With this in mind, we present an as-yet-unnamed article skimmer. Think of it as an attempt to provide the Sunday Times experience anytime. Of course, there are parts we can’t replicate: the satisfying crinkle of the paper; the circular stain of your coffee; the smell of newsprint.

Instead, our focus was on the fundamentals of the experience. It is empowering to spread so much information out on a table, so we spread as many stories as we can fit into the space of your screen. It is easier and more relaxing to scan a surface of information than flip through a stack, so information is laid out in a rigid two-dimensional grid. The sections do not flip into place; instead, they slide up and down. If you want to imagine the whole of the content as a giant uncut scroll of paper, don’t let us stop you.

We’re also geeks, so there are plenty of keyboard commands for the efficiency lovers. The space bar takes you down a section, and shift-space brings you back up. Arrow keys do the same. You can navigate sections by holding down the “s” key (s for section), typing the number that appears, and releasing the “s” key. Same goes for articles, but with the “a” key (a for article). If you need a reminder, just click the “?” in the upper right corner.

Please note: Sunday Browsing is not compatible with Internet Explorer 6, but is compatible with Internet Explorer 7 and 8.

We want you to scan sections visually, zeroing in on what interests you. Instead of displaying dates, articles gradually fade as they get older. And you can locate the newest articles with a quick glance.

We hope the result is a little taste of Sunday relaxation, whenever you need it.

at laaaaast! thank you.

You *ARE* listening! I’m grateful for this feature, as I have been wondering for a long time why there can’t be a better way to read ‘Today’s Paper’ (including Sundays) in a way that doesn’t require downloads (like Times Reader).

Thanks so much for understanding that people love the Times for the EXPERIENCE (and content), not just the paper.

Absolutely love where you are going with this. I have been looking for something like this, but find the TimesReader a little slow and clunky, particularly on my mac. Thanks and keep up the great innovative work!

Beautiful new interface – but has there been any discussion about actually expanding it to display the full articles in it as well?

Right now, having to switch back to the standard layout to read the article often means that I don’t go back to the ‘skimmer’ to continue browsing the site.

looks like a neat tool. remind me of the traditional print page layout, which is designed for skimming too.
so perhaps this can have a layout that has more visual hierarchy to help readers scan the page easier.
it was a little hard to skim this page for me. much easier to skim a regular RSS feed displaying headlines in a list.

but then i think i would prefer this tool, with a better visual hierarchy, over regular RSS feed. i’d get the benefit of NYTimes’ editorial judgment.

I love the new “article skimmer”. It is clean and fast and I prefer it to TimesReader.
One annoying bug I’ve seen so far is after I finish reading a story that is linked to from “article skimmer”, I go back in my browser to get back to article skimmer and it has reverted to the home section instead of the section I was in before clicking the article link.
I am sure this will be fixed soon!
Great job on these new products!

Totally self serving suggestion, I admit, but what about a browseable “On the Blogs” section ?

Great idea.

Thoughts:
Making keyboard navigation work is great idea. I found that holding the ‘s’ or ‘a’ key down was difficult while I wanted to type a number since I do not use the number keypad. Keeping the selection feature sticky and requiring an enter key to accept and an escape key to cancel might be more easy to use even if it is more keystrokes.

Full articles in this format would be great also, even with the inevitable advertisements that that interface would require. While it may eat up your bandwidth, I doubt it would be too bad for the broadband user.

Keep on innovating. This is great.

Still loving this — it’s going to be fantastic!

Could the sections display more articles? I have a suspicion that each section only displays the number of articles that can fit, rather than giving you the option to scroll through more (older) articles that you may have missed…

Hi,
I like the idea of a newspaper skimmer and I think if implemented properly would actually increase readership. However I think that there are multiple problems with the present implementation:

1. I think the multiple column look actually detracts from the ability to “skim” through the news. Its just hard to skim. A simpler list format with bigger photos would be better suited to skimming. eg: news.ycombinator.com

2. There is no difference in styles between different pieces of news. Ie, there are no clues as to what the article may contain. If you had one picture next to each, this would help.

I dont think I’ll be using this as I find it hard to actually skim with the present layout.

But I love you guys for trying out new stuff all the time!! You guys rock.

Very well done, I find myself reading more article using this tool. Keep up great work.

Glad to see you are copying Drudge Report now. Much better way to see news on web.

Very nice interface and makes it enjoyable to go thru the news by section. I hope you make this a permanent addition to your online access.

I like the new article skimmer very much. Good job!

Sheer brilliance, and an able and worthy replacement for the tactile but top-heavy TimesReader. I’d love to see: section links for the blogs, a section link for the ‘mosts’, the option to open articles into other windows/tabs, and a search box which can display results in the grid. Great work.

Fantastic idea BUT…

I like to skim my various news homepages for what I’m interested and command-click (on the mac, right-click on the PC) to open what I want to read in a new tab. This way I can load all the articles I want to read that day while not navigating away from the main page. Your article skimmer dis-allows that function, forcing my browser to load articles one at a time (unless I control-click and scroll down to ‘open link in new tab’, but really, who’s got the time to do that?).

OK – Long story short. Love it. Let me easily open the articles in new tabs and I’m a convert. Otherwise I’ll stick with the old way.

Thanks!

Would be great if I could ctrl-click and open articles in a new page, so that I can keep the skimmer open with out having to back up to it after each article.

I absolutely love it!!

I’d want to use it for my every-morning reading.

I’d like to drill into more of the specialized subtopics yet still browse using this app. For example, I want to read any education news, but I can’t do that easily with this. Also, it would be nice to let me enter a keyword or topic to put up the top x results onto the screen. i.e. I could enter “stimulus plan” and the top 15 articles would populate the page.

Another thing to consider is opening a new window when I click an article so that I don’t lose the skimmer by navigating away.

Overall, I do like this interface.

A few more suggestions:

– Would be great if you could switch between ‘Standard’ and ‘Today’s Paper’ views. This interface is designed for content *browsing*, making it an ideal tool for subscribers to the physical paper who are unable to get their physical copy today.

– Speaking of paper browsing, would be great if the sections included not just the standard, top-level sections, but also sections as organized in the physical paper. Many frequent visitors to NYTimes (myself included) are frustrated that we can’t subscribe to an RSS feed of sections like *Sunday Business*, “Sunday Styles”or *Weekend Arts* (only *Business*, “Fashion & Style” or *Arts*, resulting in far too many articles in each feed). The only place to see content organized like the physical paper is via the ‘Today’s Paper’ tab across the top of NYTimes.com. Problem is that page doesn’t have subtitles or pictures, so it’s really difficult to know if a particular article is of interest to you. Combining the organization of ‘Today’s Paper’ with the power of the Article Skimmer could be a great feature for loyal subscribers.

– Allow visitors to choose between ‘All Sections’ and ‘My (Favorite?) Sections’.

– Allow ‘star’ indicators on articles to come back and view later (and add a ‘starred articles’ view).

– Add the ability to skim by date (7 days), similar to the calendar on the Today’s Paper page.

– Perhaps a refresh button on each section? or the whole page?

I’m sure I could come up with more, but definitely think this new skimmer could be great!

Very nice!

My only complaint is that I want the links to open in a new tab (or window) but, probably because this is written in javascript, command-clicking to do this isn’t working. I can right click and get a context menu, but that is starting to seem like work.

Very good start and I look forward to using this excellent new interface.

Very interesting and useful concept! Congratulations!
My suggestions for improvement:
Let me somehow cycle select through Articles via a Keyboard shortcut (counting Articles and then doing “a3″ is too complicated – think about something similar to COMMAND-TAB App-switching on the mac). Highlight selected Article, then when i press ENTER, open the Article. After reading the Article, pressing the “w” key should take me back to the overview (skimmer).

This is huge! Love it! I would work on keyboard shortcuts a little more. Make them great like Gmail and Google Reader.

Thanks for this!

The Skimmer has a lot of potential. This is a better product, even as a prototype, than the Times Reader for Mac. Maybe add a blog section that was mentioned above. Looking forward to further development of the Sunday Skimmer.

The Article Skimmer is exactly what I want in a news site. Real news, smart organization, and fast. It’s my new home page and I look forward to seeing it completed.
